The difference is between "dressed up like a Nazi" and "dressed and made up with great care to look specifically like Hitler." The latter would naturally raise questions that the former would not.

people dress up like hitler and in klansmen hoods all the time at neonazi rallys.

do you think anyone casually walking around at night during the unite the right rally should have assumed all those losers were making a music video or something ??????

if you've ever been where a movie is filmed, you know that most of the time there are permits posted or someone will flag you down/alert you if you're getting next to a scene being shot because you have to sign a release or walk around. without any notice, random hitler is a big wtf, super accurate or just a guy with a stache and a swastika on his arm.

"if you're getting next to a scene being shot because you have to sign a release"

In the USA, yes. But plenty of countries don't have that law.

Re: ars_belli

(Anonymous) 2018-10-23 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
again, which is why you would have the Oh No moment until you sussed it out.

Re: ars_belli

(Anonymous) 2018-10-23 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
...So if a woman was running down the street screaming "rape!", people outside of the USA wouldn't be mildly alarmed until the guy chasing her and the camera crew rounded the corner? They would automatically assume it was filming?

That seems...ill-advised.

Re: ars_belli

Wow, that's a strange leap of logic. It was an obvious response to the US-centric "if you've ever been where a movie is filmed, you know that most of the time there are permits posted or someone will flag you down/alert you if you're getting next to a scene being shot because you have to sign a release or walk around".

They probably would if the woman in question were wearing a costume making her look exactly like Queen Victoria or someone else very famous and very dead.

The monarchy is largely dead, yeah. Nazism is not.

Re: ars_belli

(Anonymous) 2018-10-23 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The monarchy is still sadly around and retains some power and authority. In living memory, it has not been responsible for anything near what the Nazis have been.

But Hitler is dead. Which is why seeing someone walking down the street, specifically dressed as Hitler with all the attendant particularities of dress, style, grooming, etc., would make many people assume that it is someone dressed as Hitler for some sort of costume do.

You see someone in a MAGA hat. Do you think they're being ironic, or that they are an American Nationalist?

To someone who isn't included in the cishet white male ideal of what an American Citizen, do you think the difference between the hat being ironic or serious is anything but moot when it comes to their concern for their safety?

It's more like, you see someone dressed as Donald Trump, with the spraytan and the paunch and the oversized red tie and the ill-fitting suit. In which case, again, context would play a role in how I'd understand the gesture. It could be someone coming from a Trump rally. It could be a comedian's schtick.

NAYRT

I'd probably try to punch a guy walking around as Trump ngl. Anyone who matters would have a bouncer near him. On the off chance, it's the real Trump being too stupid to stay near security and I have my shot, there's a life goal fulfilled. If it's some vlogger doing a bit, a little jail time for assault is worth it for the catharsis.

Typing this out, I'd do it to the Hitler guy too. In his case I'd say sorry after he explained, but I think this guy would have been glad for me to have done something, so I still don't feel bad.

But it's now becoming increasingly common for people to dress up like Nazis in public again without shame. Which is why seeing someone walking down the street, specifically dressed as Hitler with all the attendant particularities of dress, style, grooming, etc., would make many people assume that he liked Hitler enough to model himself after him instead of it being for some costume.

This brings us back to the original question, though: how many people actually dress like Hitler in an admiring way, rather than a satirical or poorly thought-out humorous one?

Nazis? Undoubtedly.

Hitler himself? That's where I'm not sure.

"Just" a guy with a stache and a swastika on his arm? A guy with a swastika on his arm is a source of concern on his own.

Re: ars_belli

(Anonymous) 2018-10-23 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, thank you. people are acting like the accuracy of the costume makes it something else. no, he is the same as the stache and swastika on his arm guy, just with more resources/time.

Re: ars_belli

(Anonymous) 2018-10-23 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you thick? The point is that the accuracy of the costume raises the probability that he is an actor, not that you get a free pass for being a racist if you have a lot of money/time/costume skills.

DA

Some Neo-Nazis collect Nazi memorabilia. They might well have an authentic Nazi uniform to wear/base a replica on.

Maybe I've just ended up in the wrong thread via flatmemeing, but I'm not just talking about having a very authentic-looking uniform, I'm talking about bearing a strong physical resemblance to Hitler, etc.

i'm just going to assume that you're lucky enough to never have seen nazis IRL or been around one of their rallies. i'm muslim and have. there's far more people with realistic racist shit than there are movies being made in the world. the odds of seeing someone being an asshole in public is way, way higher than you happened to stumble next to a film set.

"people dress up like hitler and in klansmen hoods all the time at neonazi rallys."

Uh, the Klansmen stuff I get but do people really dress like Hitler at Neonazi rallies? Like, not just in SS Uniforms, but specifically with the pencil mustache and the combover? It was always my impression that Hitler's physical presence was the least imposing thing about him.
