The Dirty Energy Source

Do you want to make a spreadsheet about spreadsheets?
Do you still need to figure out what two other fandoms you should request beside the only one you really want fic for?
Or are you trolling ALL the letter posts for placeholders, just so you can write those people some nice, dry coal?

We want to know all about it.

NA - Okay, it's been a while since I read the wank, but wasn't Wook the one who had a preferred (non-canon) name for one of the characters and flipped her shit because the author incorporated it as a middle name instead of a christian name?

Because if so, I would 100% default on that particular bag of crazy.

Are there really that many people going 1,1 - look covered, instead of 1,1 - look requester offered?

I always go with the second version.

How many characters were nominated? Could she have just requested four side characters and that bit about not being interested in the mains is only for context?

na

Did you seriously just suggest that ayrt should write coal for one of the mods and then switch accounts before reveals to ensure anonymity?

Five Justified requests and only one letter so far. Come on, I want to know what you want!

Re: Letters making you re-think your offers

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
There are like eight or so characters nominated and the request mentions six + the two lead characters.

But isn't it all in the phrasing though? I personally think "no OOC" makes you sound like a pretentious asshole who wants perfect characterisation and nothing will ever be good enough, while "I prefer characterisation to be based on canon rather than fanon" makes the point you want to make without the negative connotations.

"No OOC" just isn't *helpful* - because what's out of character to one reader might be in character to another, depending on how they view canon.

LOL! There's no point in defaulting on a mod anyway. If anyone has to grit their teeth and graciously accept ODAO it's the people enforcing it.

Be careful, nonny. The comments track IPs and your sock might get outed.

Arguing for OR matching

I can't believe this person is seriously arguing for OR matching instead of AND. "What would be different?" like, what are you, a fucking idiot? And using that WTF-icon just comes off as rude to me. Also, that's not the impression I'm getting from letters AT ALL.

Oh. Then yeah, probably they're misusing any. :(

AYRT

Very few people who write OOC are aware of it or intend to write OOC, was what I was saying. People differ wildly on what even counts as OOC. 'No OOC' is just a meaningless statement and makes you look like a dick without actually providing any useful information to your author.

Now, if you say 'I don't like fics that use Pack Mom Stiles or Leather Pants Draco', that's much more specific and useful.

That's what I fear.
Bye, bye, little fandom. The main characters were what drew me in. Maybe the requester will post a letter.

If nothing would be different, why bother switching? Her logic is suspect.

Rayearth has been a yuletide fandom for years tho?

Must be Thursday.

Re: Arguing for OR matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer AND to OR, more chance to match on somebody who is interested in the same character combo.

Zero and single character request (usually additionally asking for characters I deliberately didn't offer) are difficult enough to navigate as is. I'd prefer min char 2 for requests as well.

She always argues with the mods about something. Every year. I suspect it's part of her Yuletide tradition.

ayrt

That's a really good point! If I still had an LJ account I'd say as much. Sucks that all anon comments are screened (and I suspect that one wouldn't get unscreened).

ayrt

I didn't know that, thanks for the info. I've put gehayi on my STAY-AWAY-FROM-AND-NEVER-TREAT list now, that's for sure.

It's on LJ, anon comments are turned off there. Screened anon comments are only on on DW and the community community.

Re: Arguing for OR matching

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yeah, exactly. Making it OR makes it more likely to receive some character study or whatever, which really wouldn't interest me all that much. I want characters interacting!

And I agree. Requests like that are hard to get a handle on what they want, so it wouldn't make sense out of that perspective either.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-20 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
It is a good idea to warn your writer of any triggers in your Optional Details - if you say clearly that you don't want something your writer is expected to abide by this. However, you may not use the optional details to demand your writer include characters who were not nominated or you didn't request; nor to demand your story includes any other fandom.

I just noticed this in the admin post. I wonder where ODAO ends and someone getting banned for writing someone something they said they didn't want begins. Is it only if you list something specifically as a trigger rather than just a DNW? What happens when someone lists something like gen as a DNW? Or says they dislike a specific pairing (but doesn't say they're triggered by it)?

I mean, it's all at the mods discretion so I doubt anything short of writing rapefic for someone who said they didn't want it would actually get someone banned but I wonder how many overly picky recips will use it to complain to the mods about what they get?

It's not just for Yuletide! I used to help mod a small exchange and every year she'd whine that her fandoms - fandoms that didn't fit the theme of the exchange - weren't included and agitate for us to change the entire exchange just so she could participate. I told her she was welcome to take the idea of our exchange and make her own with an expanded theme that could include her fandoms but to my knowledge she never did. She just kept showing up like clockwork to complain.
