How do you write soulbonding?

I probably wrote this when I was in high school. Never in fandom. I want to try but what do people expect when they ask for it?

Soulbonding can be written a lot of different ways, coalie. I once wrote soulbonding wingfic, for instance. I think the main thing people expect when they ask for it is two characters who are connected irrevocably to each other, emotionally but sometimes also physically. It doesn't have to be romantic, even, but that's generally implied. There are a lot of ways to approach it, and the fandom/characters will probably dictate how you tackle it.

The soulbonding world is your oyster, basically.

Friendship soulbonding! Reluctant rivals to friends soulbonding! Different kinds of soulbonds in the same universe, and couples have to figure out if they're a romantic bond or not complete with fail!sex! Why aren't there more of these?

I'm going to guess Big Eden as a good place for you to start your sleuthing. That, or the other movie mentioned in that thread about soulbonds for canon m/m movies where two anons thought they were talking about the same movie, then discovered not so much, and one recced the other Big Eden. (Yes, I remember it pretty well due to my own soulbonds interests. And yes, I'm too lazy to actually look up links.)

Wonder Boys is the other movie.

Oh man, I'd love to see more of this. I may have to go edit my letter to reflect this.

I seem to recall a few pretty good DS9 Kira/Odo soulbound fics back in the day. It was a Bajorian religious thing that involved ear groping.

I expect the characters to be emotionally linked, so they can feel what each other is feeling or pine into illness when separated/at odds with each other, etc. If there's other kinds of magic, I like them being able to draw on each other's power... which can be a bad thing if they don't actually get along. I love it when the soulbonding happens for a reason, like they're ~fated~ to do something together--doesn't have to be love, though I have a totally unironic fondness for Fated Soulbond Love. Basically, I want the unit they form together to be something more than what they are individually. At the same time, I would read the hell out of something that talks about how messed up it is to have your spirit tied to somebody else's like that.
