Hippos are crucial in connecting betas to authors with any anonymity. Hope you're okay when your gift Is Not Beta. They're about the closest we'll ever get to quality assurance, whether or not you care about getting spoiled for your gift.

She could have said anything else besides "Get out of chat" to ensure that the fic had a beta.

"Hippo is requesting a five minute delay to the word war"
"Hippo will be back to dance in 20 minutes"
"Whew, the word war has started, who can help out with this request?"

Literally. Anything. Else.

I am pretty confident that anyone who puts "is not beta" in their author's notes didn't try to use a hippo (or the beta spreadsheet) to begin with.

And I have used hippo services on both ends in previous years, but that doesn't excuse the comments from these particular hippos (which were entitled, sanctimonious, and hella whiny.)
