Re: Any word from chat, the mods etc as to when the collection will be reopened and PHs go out?

It's the mods who are fucking you over, to be fair. They're the ones who choose to accommodate it. If they really wanted PHs to get picked quickly and have the biggest pool of writers around to claim them, they'd post it around noon USA East Coast/midmorning USA West Coast time.

And I say that as someone whose time zone never aligns well with the USAs. If they're going to hold off sending stuff ASAP then they might as well maximize it for the greatest chance. Otherwise post them as they come and don't wait for them to clump up in batches as all.

If they're going to hold off, I'd like a set time, and everyone knows if they want a pinch hit, to be there then. It's nothing to stay up once or twice. Even twice a day, and if that time goes with no emails, then that's it until the next time. Should still get most everyone, but lets people manage their schedules more effectively.

(says me, who's been awake for 30-something hours and refuses to sleep in case of pinch hits)

AYRT

I don't want to wank about the mods because their job is hard and messy as hell and I genuinely think they're doing great, most of the time, but this really bugs me. I don't think it matters much when it's still early days whether or not a PH goes out a few hours earlier or later, but with less than 7 days still reveals, I think stretching the post-deadline PHs over several batches really favors the earlier ones to an unfair degree.

It's not just the longer exposure they get for getting sent out early, it's also that some PHs indeed just have time to do one, and when they don't get to see everything that's available, they might be picking one from the first batch and not even look at the later ones (or look at them and think 'aw, I would have loved to write that, but I'm busy with this other one already, too bad').

I don't know. Maybe I'm overthinking it because I'm just stressed out and tired and disappointed about being defaulted on. -.-

+1, especially since they're not doing first-in best-dressed.

It's the mods' job to assure you a fic. It's not the mods' job to assure you a good fic.

No where in the rules does it say that everyone is entitled to an equal chance at claiming pinch hits either. Post them as they come and don't try to give time zones equal treatment.

It's not necessarily about the equality for time zones thing. At least one of the mods (and IIRC, they're all in different time zones) needs to be available for a while during each batch to send out the pinch hits and assign them to the claimants. Sending out over 100 post-deadline PHs all at once and having to deal with that rush sounds like a recipe for disaster, especially since we already had a major screw-up earlier this year with assigning a PH.

+1

I think giving the mods time to reasonably handle the REPLIES to each batch is the really important bit. And seeing as they usually follow up to get all the PHs from each batch taken care of, it could take hours to manage that with a giant batch.

+2 - Think about it, folks. The mod doing this sends out a dozen emails, gets many more replies, has to find the fastest respondents and respond to them, go into the Archive, manually re-assign the pinch hits (slowly, of course, because I'm sure doing anything with the YT page is a beast), and double-check things. I'm sure the spacing-out is primarily for their ability to manage the process reasonably and accurately.

Obviously. That would be super hard to enforce. But giving everyone the same chance at a good fic should be easy enough. Or at the very least, you know, not deliberately making the chances more uneven than they have to be.
