Re: Any word from chat, the mods etc as to when the collection will be reopened and PHs go out?

Eh, you could look at it that way but on the other hand, you could also argue that posting them over a day or so exposes them to more potential writers and spreads things out more, which probably means fewer PHs per author. Better to be your author's only PH than to be one of three picked up by someone in the lucky timezone that was able to grab most of them.

The mods check to make sure people aren't hoarding PHs. If someone tries to claim five PHs the mods won't let it happen until a day passes and nobody else comes forward. This close to the deadline they prioritize giving PHs to people without them even if they have to wait to find that person.

Given how small the majority of fandoms are does it really matter when they go as long as they're up? If someone in Japan is the only one who knows your fandom and is willing to PH then it doesn't matter if it goes up at 1PM UK time, your PH will linger until that person comes online and sees it.

According to AO3's stats and most of Yuletides anecdata, the USA has the biggest number of users so posting them with a bias towards their timezones *is* what exposes them to the greatest amount of potential writers. Giving Asia and NZ/Austalia a fighting chance is nice and all but the amount of people who do Yuletide from there isn't large enough to warrant it.

As someone who's probably not easy to find a PH for (which, I imagine, applies to most people with microscopic tiny-even-for-Yuletide fandoms), this is not really a way of thinking applies here. For me, earlier posting date = more people seeing it = more likely to find a pinch hitter.

Also, I don't necessarily think that being the author's only PH is really better. If the author can handle more than one without the quality suffering, that's great. You're either lucky with your pinch hitter or you're not - that's purely chance; how many PHs they take on doesn't really factor in.

I am Anomaly in everything but I work better if I have a couple to switch between. And since we can edit now, I feel it's maybe less important, because even if someone's put in their main story or a previous PH, they could still be editing it but it looks like they've finished on the archive.

I think last year was the first time they said if you had a ph already you wouldn't get another one. I'm not sure how well it worked because I had several and mostly all at once, rather than spread out through the month.

Oh I agree. I can (and have, thanks to claiming stuff with socks) handled 5 PHs easy and have them all be longer than 5k, betaed, and catered to the prompts - but unless you're close to the mods they don't want to give you multiple PHs until they're sure that nobody else is willing to take them.

Last year was the first year for the anti-Kitty rule but they're still doing it this year. It's probably easier to slip through the cracks if you're grabbing them sporadically from different batches, which is another point in "dump them all"s favor imo. It's easy to see that coalie123 is trying to take a bunch of them when they're replying to emails within the same timeframe.

It's not in the PH instructions page this year, which just says:

If you're the first person to request a pinch hit, the Yuletide mods will respond and let you know it's yours. You'll be able to see it listed on your AO3 profile page by clicking "Assignments" in the left-hand navigation pane. If the Yuletide Mods don't respond to you, you didn't get the pinch hit.

... Bit misleading.
