Hmmm, good point.

So it's generally what, ~50-60 people going out in the main post-deadline PH batch? (I am not on the PH list so I can't check the exact number.) But you have to assume there's also some other folks who got defaulted on and didn't go out to PHs because they already had a treat, or a mod or someone snagged them before they went out, or they were a defaulter themselves, or they were double-assigned and their other writer came through. So the actual number of writers defaulting at the deadline would be somewhere above the number of PHs sent.

I think you're right -- 100 is too high -- but I suspect the number of writers blowing the deadline is closer to 70 than it is to 12. As for how many of those 70 or so intended to post, well, that's harder to judge.

Nobody commented to the DW post to say they missed the deadline. Six people on the LJ post said they missed the deadline (without intending to). So it's somewhere around 10%, but hard to judge exactly.

It seems a little weird to me that there's no automatic email that goes out to all participants (or all participants who have not yet posted a story) a couple days before the deadline reminding them that it's approaching. I mean, we're here on _coal and in chat and have YT on the brain, so we're not the types to forget or miss it, but what about the more casual participants?

Obviously the ideal situation is everyone takes responsibility for their own commitments, yadda yadda yadda, but it seems like a quick auto-generated "Just a reminder that the deadline is x time on x day!" email would help everyone out.

(Ignore this post if an email like this DID go out and, like, went to my spam or something. But I've never seen one, I don't think.)

Nah, there's no such thing as a 'remember the deadline approaches' e-mail. There are regular LJ and Twitter posts, but I have no idea how many people check there. You're right - that would definitely be a good idea.

There is no AO3 emailing option for mods. If they want to email everyone, they literally have to copy paste everyone's emails from the interface into an email.

Oh wow, that's inconvenient. But I assume if the Yuletide mods lobbied for one, it wouldn't be too difficult for AO3 to make it happen?

So it's generally what, ~50-60 people going out in the main post-deadline PH batch?

It was 100+ this year, but I always assume those are generally not people who accidentally happened to miss the deadline but people who decided between sign-ups and now that they DGAF about Yuletide (or who simply realised they couldn't make it due to RL concerns or other reasons) and have in fact no intention of hanging in their assignment late or at all. I mean, I've definitely done that with other exchanges (not Yuletide, because the threat of being banned in future years is a pretty powerful motivator).

So those people wouldn't contact the mods after the deadline with a panicked "what do I do now? I can still post my assignment, right?" e-mail. The only people to do that - or to comment on the LJ post - would be people who still intent to upload a fic and participate, and I really believe that those are the minority among the deadline defaulters.

I could be wrong, though.

I run a small exchange in my fandom, and in five years and probably about 20 forced defaults at the deadline, I have only ever had two people turn in a fic a few hours/a day late because of being mistaken about the deadline. The other 90% of people I forcibly defaulted either forgot about the exchange, decided they didn't care about the exchange, forgot to default on their own or didn't know they could. The YT percentage of people who do this may be somewhat higher because of the no-default deadline + the posting deadline being at a weird hour of the morning for people in the US, but I would be shocked if much more than 15% or so of forced defaults were people who have a finished/nearly finished fic to turn in.

na
I've been on the other side of that: I didn't meet the first draft deadline, and I had anxiety issues then, so I didn't contact the mods. The posting/final drafts was a long way away, but unfortunately instead of '???' the mods sent me an 'wtf, HOW DARE YOU, YOU ASSHOLE?' email, so I disappeared completely. I'm not proud of it, but I also still feel upset about that email, even years later.

I do agree that most people don't miss or forget about the deadline, they either DGAF or for some other reason aren't interested in posting on time or at all.

I think a lot of the deadline missers here are people who legit forgot/got confused about the deadline being UTC and thought it was their own time zone. It would probably be good to have repeated reminders in the admin comm that the deadline is in UTC, giving a link to a site that does local timezone conversion.

...oh, wait.

I sent a deadline is coming text to the person I beta for and their response leads me to believe that they reaĺly misunderstood that the deadline was in UST.
