Eeeh, often you need a mass comm or marketing background for that these days. If the fic was set in 2006 that'd be another thing, but these days?

Depends on the age of the character, though. If they're in their early 30s, they would have been starting their career around 2006, and it may be plausible that they fell into social media work right out of college and worked their way up.
