......it's a SPAG beta. You're literally telling them beforehand that you need them for the SPAG that spellcheck didn't get to. If you're sending someone a fic that you know has canon holes and ask for a canon beta to help you spot/fix them, are you a dick?

That the spell check and your own efforts at editing didn't pick up. They are an extra set of eyes for things YOU don't catch, not your SPAG mommy cleaning up your mess.

Yes, exactly? People read over what they write as they write it but they don't have time to reread from start to finish (or it's all still so fresh in their mind that they can't spot nonspellcheck errors) and so it is given to a SPAG beta to clean it up.

You can wank over this if you like but nobody forces you to SPAG beta. You can keep yourself to canon/characterization/pacing/etc if being used as a second pair of eyes makes you feel like someone's "mommy".
