Why are you pissed? You've got an extra fic you want to read! I know I quite often get inspiration from someone else's letter if my recipient's is not great.

I feel like, if I write a prompt, it's because I want it to be for me not for someone else. I've never been in this situation, but I feel like if I coveted something super specific, shook my gift and believed I finally got the fic of my dreams, only to see it given to something else I would be hurt and probably not comment.

Yeah, it's my fault for shaking my gift, but I feel like if someone really wants this one specific and rare thing, to see it go to someone else is like expecting the barbie dream house, only to see it given to your sister while you get a bunch of clothes.

To pull from the other anon even though I know nothing about HP, the real metaphor here is Harry asking for a wand because he's the only wizard in that damn house and then they give it to the fat kid just because the fat kid is owed a gift too. Like yeah okay, but you could have given him anything and then given Harry the wand if you were gonna buy the wand anyway. Yes Harry can admire it and sneak inside the fat kids room to use it but it's still not his.

And on top of that you want Harry to go, "wow that sure is a nice wand! My fat cousin is so lucky!" Lmao no, get out.

Re: Well, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's fanfic. Everyone gets that wand. One kid has their name written in small letters on one side but everyone still gets that wand. This is like those idiots who compare writing fanfic to stealing a car. You still have the car! You still get the wand! You still get to read the story you wanted to read!

I don't get people.

It's a gift exchange. When you participate in a gift exchange, you are expecting a gift tailored to your interests. When you see what should be your gift handed off to someone else it's annoying.

Sorry you don't understand that, but you're pretty shitty if you do that and then expect the person who originally requested it to then fawn all over you because hey! they'll see it anyway. If they do, fine, but it's not expected and you shouldn't count on it/should understand that someone might get fucking pissed.

Re: Well, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing is handed. It's all electrons. Seriously. OP, you got the cake too. You got what you wanted to read. There is no reason to be angry about it, there is reason to go, thank fuck the thing I wanted to read got written. I know it wasn't my gift because I tailored my recipient's gift to everything in their letter, but in other years I've had recipients who gave me blank signups. Hell yeah I went looking for ideas among the other letters posted. It doesn't matter if OP doesn't comment on the fic, because let's be real: most people who claim to be awesome commenters are lying liars who lie and can't even bother to kudos. I've watched them in the wild. Whatever. But if OP got to read the story they wanted to read, there is zero reason to be upset about it and every reason to be glad.

You keep wanking about this. I'll be busy reading through the archive and enjoying what got written for other people.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
what is your actual point in this comment because i feel like i'm missing it.

don't feel x emotion? people can't control their emotions dude.

you don't see to be saying anything about commenting so if you don't care if they do/don't comment then....who cares? as long as the OP doesn't leave a mean comment on the fic then the author will never know; nobody is hurt by the op being upset or angry. this is an anon community where people come to vent. if the author is here and realizes this is about them then they're entitled to feel sad too but they shouldn't be here if someone talking about them would bother them.

Re: Well, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
They get to read it and now they can do it without having to comment on it, win/win. Nobody will know or care that they didn't (not on their gift page!) and the author can't bitch about it because "The person whose letter I took a prompt from didn't comment on the fic i wrote and gifted to someone else! wahh!" sounds whiny and entitled since there are a lot of reasons that person didn't see the fic.

I don't get why you're upset that some random author might not get a comment from someone they aren't owed a comment from. It's a free fic and other people can comment. What's the big deal?

Re: Well, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
That's just stupid. Fic is not a concrete item that only one person can enjoy at a time. If it's a story you like, it doesn't matter who it was written for.

Re: Well, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's crap. I had it happen to me in another year and I was really angry & never commented. Cool if you disagree, but don't crib my prompts and then expect me to be excited you gave my fic to someone else.

Re: Well, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Have you considered therapy?

Re: Well, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Have you (and the OP) considered that if the writer gave a shit about your feelings or your reactions, they would have obviously actually given the fic to you?

Here's what's likely: you and the OP sound like thin skinned wankers, you've probably wanked before, and the writer liked your prompts but wanted to avoid you and the OP personally. They most likely will never give a shit that you did not comment because they were hoping to avoid your dumb ass.

Re: Well, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Then it's a win for everybody and there's no reason for you to be upset? Encourage them not to comment so that everybody is happy.

Re: Well, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
That is so, so fucking weird. So it was something that you enjoyed but because it simply didn't have you're name on it you were upset? And wouldn't comment because of it? That's just seriously bizarre.

Re: Well, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-25 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really so confused about it. If I really like something and it's close to what I always wanted, I would do a little dance. Actually, I would do a pretty big dance. And if they potentially used my letter as a inspiration? Who gives a shit. It's not like other people haven't thought of similar ideas.

I wouldn't be hurt but probably would not read it because I forgot or because I'm worried about DNWs.
