So, how do we try to get umbrella fandom de-synning to happen?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-26 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
All these mini Historical RPF fandoms are now being synned, not sub-tagged, to Historical RPF in AO3. And I suspect there's some other umbrella fandom synning going on too.

Wranglers or not, how do we try to convince people to de-syn them and make them sub-tags in the archive? I don't even really care about the tags in Yuletide 2016 anymore, I feel like this is making it almost impossible for people to find their mini-fandoms AT ALL.

Suggestions?

Send a support ticket about it, saying that you disagree with the general policy for XYZ reasons and want your concern/suggestion directed to wrangling staff and wranglers of Historical RPF.

This is probably a dumb question, but what's the (practical, from a user pov) difference between synning and sub-tagging?

Syn = Synonym aka if you click that tag you will see everything it is synonymous to and not only that thing. Aka the Kal-El tag shows you stuff tagged Clark Kent, Kal-El, Superman/Clark Kent, Clark Joseph Kent, Superman, etc.

Subtag = The tag still stands on its own. You would only see fics tagged with Kon-El where Superman (pretend this is how the tag usage is reflected, here) was an alien/on Krypton. However sinxe it is subtagged to the Superman tag, if you went to the Superman tag then you would see everything else that was sub tagged to it, aka Clark Kent, Kal-El, Superman/Clark Kent, Clark Joseph Kent, Superman, etc.

In this case something like Ancient Rome RPF tag would only show that, and with subtagging the Historical RPF would show all hisortical RPF, including Ancient Rome RPF.
