New letters thread for the new post

Any recent letters to gripe about?

I know this is book-elitist or whatever and I know there are plot changes but I'm glad I only offered the book for IT because of how this person seems...unaware of what's to come and is basically prompting the writer to contradict a pretty big aspect of that story which I doubt the next film won't include at all.

"if Bev does go away, if the others begin to as well (I know they do, in the book), will writing keep them together? How do they make sure they can return when the time comes, and stay a family?" Oh boy...

Oh man, all of those prompts are a tough call for anyone who's actually read the book.
I haven't seen the movie yet, so maybe it is sufficiently different to come up with new ideas, but if you've read the book then all those requests for backstory are going to be hard to deal with, even if you signed up for the movie in good faith. Or really easy, if you plagiarise, I guess.

Having said that, I do love epistolary fic, and part of me is tempted to write a little something where they start out writing but the letters get more and more generic and finally just... stop.

I am That Asshole who asked for fic based on reading part 1 of an ongoing series, so I have some sympathy for her. (And in her defense, she asked for other stuff that wouldn't break canon so much.)

Ah, I want to treat a book series and the person only requested about part 1. I don't feel comfortable treating them specifically now, for fear of spoiling them.

I don't really see the issue here.

I could explain, but reading over the previous comment I think I explained it pretty well, so.

As someone who often hopes all fic she starts reading for some big fandoms (think Teen Wolf, or character deaths on shows with many character deaths) ignores half the canon, I concur.

I've been keeping an eye on Peter Pan requests because I feel like treating some Wendy/Hook, and holy cow do I hope whoever got mctabby didn't match on it:

https://mctabby.dreamwidth.org/514011.html

Almost the entire section of it is going on about how much she hates the canon, and, oh, doesn't like pirates so good luck if you only offered Hook, write something subversive so further good luck if you offered it because you're a fan of the world as it is. Oh, or a crossover with a non-Yuletide eligable fandom.

Just reading it as someone looking to treat the fandom makes me feel miserable!

You couldn't have only offered Hook, it was either Hook and Wendy or Any. Offering one character only isn't possible for Yuletide as soon as more than one character is in the tag set.

Re: New letters thread for the new post

(Anonymous) 2017-10-12 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Either way, anyone offering the fandom is going to be offering Hook - and he's most likely why they offered it. Dick move on letter writer's part.

I did forget that you can't only offer a single character! So that does make it better at least, though, still, there are only four characters nominated, she could have just left Hook off if she doesn't want something pirate-focused instead of choosing Any without having to then pick and choose from other nominated characters.

Ugh. And it's interesting how this person goes to town on how much she hates Peter Pan but it's not like the other fandoms she requests aren't ~problematic too.

Also, I note she gives access to and has access from ars_belli. LOL.

I offered Peter Pan and if I had matched on that I definitely would have defaulted. If you hate the canon, at least have the decency to post your letter ahead of time so people can avoid you.

NA

Interestingly enough, I went to go look if mctabby is at least a good commenter to make up for their shit prompts (answer: decent when they bother to comment - they didn't comment or kudos their NPT gift this year), and they already have a Yuletide gift. A treat? Their assigned writer being inspired? Their assigned writer getting that assignment and going "ugh" and shitting something out real quick? Who knows?

"So, here's the thing, I'm a technical writer."

Mate, I sure hope you write your tech docs better than you wrote this letter. I don't know what's worse - your layout, your punctuation, or your rampant abuse of sentence fragments.

(Like, I think I'm mostly irked because I'm a tech writer myself, but whatevs. Have some pride.)

if you're gonna mention this, you need to be ON POINT. this is why i never mention any editing/writing background IRL. 1) no1curr and 2) i don't care to edit/review my posts to hunt out whatever mistake i'm bound to miss.

Eh, I like fresne's fic. (Although it does often have some editing errors.) A casual exchange letter is different than on-the-job work.

As a technical writer myself, I'm drawn to that prompt. There are fun things that could be done with stupidest user requirements ever.

... I don't know what they want. I could write for them, but I don't know what they want. Where does each prompt end? Why are some prompts given twice? I have to think they were in a rush or something.

(aka please say who you requested and not just the fandom!)

For the Mummy series - requesting Rick and Jonathan
“The thing I'd most love for this fandom doesn't really fit what I'm allowed to request because the character didn't make the list, but I figured since I also have a request prompt the fits it couldn't hurt to slip it in there just in case... that said, if you're feeling it, I would ADORE a story in which Imhotep gets a 'happy' ending complete with true love. Because every time I watch the movies I'm always struck by what a seriously raw deal the guy got from basically everything and everybody all because he was in love. <3”

Just! Nominate! The Character! Yourself!

DA

Oh, we got another one of these.

https://calmingcupoftea.dreamwidth.org/44550.html

for Death in Paradise, they want a character that wasn't nominated, which is weird! It's weird that he's not nominated! so they're just not even going to bother to give a prompt for any other characters. At least Mummy requester did leave another prompt, even if it comes off a lot like 'if you don't write this thing you didn't offer you will ruin my yuletide.'
