I've also heard that they tend to both comment on gifts even though the gift's just for one of them, which sounds kinda cute.

DA Every time someone names the Watsons in one of these threads, someone shows up to point out that (a) they're not bad as recips, really! and (b) if you write for one, the other will comment!

I'm sure they're fine as recips and I wouldn't game my signup to avoid them or anything. But screw treating. Even if they weren't behind the whole Queen fiasco, one of them wrote a DNW for someone really recently, and then when the mod pointed it out they rewrote the fic and posted it again with the DNW still intact. I reserve my treats for people who don't do that. (Yes, even if they then return and write their recip another fic well over minimum word count. At that point the damage was done and I felt like that put the recip in a super-awkward position of having to be gracious about it.)

Also at least one of them lurks here so it's entirely possible they are anon-defending themselves.

ayrt That's been my theory, TBH. There's been a lot of similar-sounding comments sticking up for them here and on FFA.

Nope, I'm someone else who had them as a recip and they were nice and both commented. You can look at their gift fics - the comments are right there.

Deets about the recent DNW thing?

IIRC it was the Darker than Black deathfic, which they then re-wrote to not be a deathfic, except if you knew the canon something happened that indicated the character would/had died. (Think of a bell ringing meaning an angel got its wings in It's a Wonderful Life.)

That was shahayred, not one of the Watsons, I'm pretty sure.

AYRT

I think you're right, sorry!

It was fawatson during this year's Every Woman -- if you check her profile the fics are still there. The recip had an infidelity DNW. I didn't see the original version, but the reposted version still had a kiss -- see her A/N below:

I inadvertently but incorrectly wrote something which the recipient did not want (infidelity). Fortunately, the Mod brought it to my attention, and when I edited the story and it still did not satisfy, the Mod persisted, explaining that, yes a kiss does = adultery, so I really ought to change it again. Hopefully the story has now been edited to everyone's satisfaction and I can only apologise again for upsetting my recipient and thank the Mod for her patience and goodwill.

She wrote another fic for the recip after that, and a bunch of anons who I'm sure totally weren't her or her sister showed up on FFA to say how nice that was of her, and how she totally went above and beyond. :|

Yes, fawatson, words do in fact have meanings.

+ 1

It's nice that they give good comments, but why would I want to give an extra present to someone who gives shitty presents, when there are literally hundreds of other people to treat?

Re: The no-treat list

(Anonymous) 2017-10-12 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

Treats are extra effort and work. I enjoy doing them, but they're definitely an above-and-beyond thing. I've got a lot of potential people I could treat, so when I'm narrowing that list down, I'm going to focus on giving them to good eggs, newbies, etc. and avoid going above and beyond for people who've made exchanges unpleasant for other people in the past.

da

Why creepy? I dislike them both, but in general, don't see anything creepy about siblings commenting on gifts to each other. I show mine to my sister when it's a fandom she'll like.

Occasionally in fandoms that overlap isn't creepy. The THEY ALWAYS COME IN PAIRS thing grosses me out. I can't get my creepdar to quit pinging them, I think something weird is up with their relationship.

Re: The no-treat list

(Anonymous) 2017-10-12 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
There's something about the way they comment that is weird to me, and it might just be Watson Eating Crackers, but it's like any giftfic is for both of them almost, that kind of thing.

YES this is what I mean! It almost makes the boundary between their identities seem... blurry. I thought one of them was the other's sock for a while.

This whole thing makes me laugh because I too am a twin whose twin runs in a lot of the same fandoms and she's pretty much my go-to fandom friend, and even we aren't like that. I wouldn't say I find it creepy, but it is somewhat suspicious.

Re: The no-treat list

(Anonymous) 2017-10-12 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
why creepy?

my friend and i almost always comment on gifts each other receives... it's intentional but also we have similar interests so we tend to like each other's gifts anyway

Don't they also tend to overlap on all their fandoms, which don't get tons of fic? It would seem odd if they weren't both reading the stuff written for each other in overlap fandoms, unless the Watsons are the type to only ever read/comment on their gifts. (Which they may be? I don't know much about them besides "weird tinpot dictators of the Renault fandoms, also probably wrote gay-bashing dragons.")
