I just realized they posted a letter before signups closed and it does have prompts but it isn’t linked in their optional details, so somebody who didn’t check the letters posts might not have seen it. I hope they don’t get a fic that tries to incorporate all those DNWs as prompts.

are there people out there who don't like treats? one of the prompts is for a fandom i desperately want to write, but they haven't posted their letter to the app or comm posts, so I'm second guessing myself

i think the people who don't want treats are long time participants don't have a letter and have blank sign ups. or who don't link their letter and they give as little prompts as possible while not being an asshole to their writer.

if it's a noob, someone with a lot of enthusiasm in their letter, or someone with prompts in general, i bet you're fine.

Those people could DNW treats. I honestly think if you want to write to prompt in the tiny fandom, other people in that tiny fandom will be delighted and probably the recip will be, too.

It really depends on both the tone of canon and what you consider "crackfic".

If you're writing them both as penguins or girlscout cookies or something, then it's probably better not to without a concrete request. If your definition of "crack" is much broader, you might be okay.

If it's Venom or Deadpool or something, being turned into a girlscout cookie is significantly less weird than some of the shit that happened in the comics.

If you’re planning to write the crackfic as a treat, why not write it first to get the idea out of the way? I agree that if they don’t think to DNW crackfic but don’t list it as a like either it probably shouldn’t be their main gift, but if you’ve got an idea and the creative impulse you might as well ride it and consider the serious gift once the zany one is out of your system.

I honestly think if coal is going to be officially a place that would rather protect exclusionists and transphobes than focus on exchange wank it isn’t worth trying to salvage anymore. I believed that the majority of the community members weren’t this vile, but if they’ve overrun the place, why not splinter off? This post has really shown me that I vastly prefer dead or slow coal to active with off-topic hate coal. I know someone in the new HQ post just said they don’t want to be run out of their own community and that would be like giving it to the assholes but I don’t think I have the spoons to endure being immersed in their shit.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
totally valid.

the yuletide threads on ffa are everything you want. people who hate ffa get mad about the mods freezing politics or ~contraversial opinions~ or holding grudges or wtf ever, but unlike in real life, if you haven't committed any ~crimes, you really have nothing to hide on ffa. it sounds like you won't have a problem with that. everything you like about coal also happens there, there's more people on ffa and coal.

if some of that stuff does bother you and you may want to be ~wanky about other fandoms/anons, don't venture into other threads. if all you care about is yuletide, just stick there.

You wouldn't be immersed in shit if people just stopped engaging these idiots. Trolls gonna troll, it's the people who'll passionately argue with them for hundreds and hundreds of comments that keep this shit smeared all over the comm.

If you see a shitty comment, ignore it and move on, there is absolutely no point in arguing for 100+ comments.

FFA is really cisnormative and dismissive of concerns about other isms. I know the terfs are still there, they stick out really obviously with their bad opinions that get so much support. I wish there was a community where queer folks and people of color and anybody else who just doesn’t want those groups to have to justify being treated like human beings could safely talk about exchange wank, without having to explain whatever-ism 101 to the willfully ignorant. And flatmeme!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
so you don’t want to just talk about yuletide? or? none of that stuff will come up if you’re talking about brainstorming or who to treat. if it does, you yell mod and they freeze. all yuletide, only yuletide.

for general talk, idk make friends? my locked twitter is me an 80 other friends who have exactly what you’re looking for. i dont think it’s possible to have that in an anon space even with mods. maybe an aggressivly maintained lgbt subreddit? idk

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s pretty uncomfortable when the only responses to shitty beliefs are affirming those beliefs, too.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Gonna go out on a limb here and say that any "discussion" about these issues would fizzle in <10 comments if no one took the bait and engaged them in debate.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I just looked and right now the FFA Yuletide thread still has people talking about biological determinism and how trans people are the real gender essentialists. I guess what I was hoping for really isn’t possible to maintain.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-24 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, we get it, you're very persecuted.

Yeah, you're right. Sorry but it's just unrealistic to expect a community that is thoughtful and kind towards social justice issues but also wants to anonymously stir shit about a fanfiction exchange. Not because everyone in the latter group is anti-SJ or anything like that, but because by nature a community like this will attract some unsavory sorts and most of us here would rather just ignore them and have a more active community than move to a more heavily moderated community that also might ban some wank we find amusing.

I was thinking about it but decided just to write a bunch of extra treats instead.

Re: Give us hope, coalies!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-25 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
FWIW, I had a bucket offer with 0 offers I removed at the last minute but still plan on writing treats for.

Re: Biggest fandom you offered? Zero-requests fandom?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
A League of Their Own was my biggest fandom with 5 requests and 10 offers. Smallest was 1 request/0 offers which was... all but two others (that had 1/1 each, neither of which was offered by me!!!!!).

(I think if I mention my smallest fandom I'll give myself away...)

Re: Assignments!!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I got one of my bucket fandoms, which I wasn't really expecting, but it's one I've wanted to write again for but have avoided signing up for challenges with because a notoriously wanky person always requests it and I try to avoid getting matched with them. I'm excited!
