Any suggestions for something cute/fluffy/funny for a canon F/F couple that hasn't been done a million times before? I have ideas, but they're all on the plottier side, and I suspect I couldn't do them in 1-2K.

One of them getting the other ready for something or coaching them through something? Anything from "let me run through my speech with you" to golf lessons--could allow for some banter and touching and an inherent beginning-to-ending structure.

One of them has a really bad day--not personal tragedy bad, but "car won't start, spilled coffee on myself, had an awful headache" bad, and the other one consoles/coddles them a little at the end of it? Or they've both had terrible days and they commiserate with each other and are obviously each other's bright spots?

Accidental cat/other pet acquisition? Or perhaps they get stuck babysitting a small child who's a total hellion? (Especially if they have limited experience with kids or have an allergy to/phobia about the pet?)

They spend a weekend together somewhere they've never been, by choice or accident. Eg their car breaks down outside a themed tourist attraction, or they're booked into the same hotel as a robotics convention, or they win tickets to go on a mystery cruise.

Awesome, I think I have something I can work with now. <3 Thanks, everyone -- these were all excellent suggestions.

Final treat: GO GO GO.

I really need examples of mild medical torture/experimentation that could leave a person at least mostly functional (but still has a little bit of horror and a good h/c vibe).

Sleep deprivation, injected with hallucinogens or similar, electroshock therapy, bloodletting...

Teeth pulling. Small area chemical burns that leave mild to moderate damage. Painful acupuncture. Bones being forcibly broken (think fingers, toes).

Getting spinal fluid samples taken? It's painful, very scary for a lot of people and you have to be completely still to not make it worse.

Medical torture anon:

Thank you all so much! This is really helpful, and it all sounds absolutely and appropriately terrible.

Something that would cause enough scandal in Regency England that you have to get into a fake relationship, but not so much scandal that you have to get married.

Spotted together without a chaperone? Not quite 'Get thee to a church' but cause for concern and 'What are your intentions?'

This is based on my reading of Regency-era fanfic rather than any actual historical knowledge, but:

Being caught eating dinner with, or otherwise consorting with, a known courtesan

Spending unchaperoned time with a suitor not approved of by your parents or society

Being quoted in the tittle-tattle papers saying something outrageous about men, women, relationships, etc.

Having the favor of someone higher up in society, and gossip says you earned it on your back

Someone sends a letter that can be construed as having ~*~romantic~*~ intent and it gets picked up by the wrong person.

It's a country estate party! and everyone is horrible except this one person, so you're going to hang out with them and they agree to pretend to court/be courted by you to help you out.

Looking for unusual but high-paying or influential jobs in NYC a English major could do.

Re: Late-Breaking Plot Help

(Anonymous) 2016-12-19 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
How old they are and how important their major is to their day to day job in the story? Are they just out of college in which case the English major is still relevant, or are they now 30 where your major doesn't necessarily define what you do any more? You could be 30 and be a Marketing Director for a big company, or have gone to law school and be a lawyer, or anything you want.

Corporate communications -- someone who strategizes corporate communications strategies, writes speeches, etc. If you're doing it for the right company, it can be pretty influential.

Source: I know an English major who now does this for a major company. It's surprisingly well-paid.

If they're good at it, grant-writing for political orgs. The grant-writer is usually paid based on securing the grant and it isn't glamorous but it does decide what projects get funding (usually the more grants a writer secures through applications the higher their commission will be but that varies by organization).

With the right personal connections they could have nabbed a lucky position ghost-writing for a well known figure. They could be big into new media and be working on gameified interactive literature.

Childhood character/interest-developing moments for a girl who grows up to be essentially a mad scientist?

Baking as an intro to chemical reactions, insect or other critter-catching, watching a parent kludge what needs fixed around the house/being sent to help in tight places that can use little hands like inside wheel wells... Maybe trip to the local science museum to ride the animatronic dinos (and take apart their valuable inner workings)?

Watched Back to the Future and decided to recreate Doc Brown's toasting and coffee machine from the opening sequence. Maybe there is a small fire, which shows kiddo that fire extinguishers are rad fun and tries to make something similar with bubble liquid and a hand-pumped pressure washing tank.
