A fic I beta'd that was... to put it bluntly, a florid purple mess, didn't credit me as beta. There was really nothing I could do with it if I didn't want to rewrite the entire thing line by line. At least it doesn't look like I approved of this nonsense.

cackling that my terrible recip, whom i defaulted on due to serious rl shit and their flaming garbage pile prompts, has no giftfic. you defaulted too, bitch! i don't feel guilty anymore! and my writer wrote me a great-looking longfic in the fandom within which i tried my best to churn out something, WAHOOO /rides into sunset

I know for a fact my gift was 700 words shorter when I shook it - it went from 1153 (I was bored, I got it down to exact word count) to about 1800.

I wrote them a pretty good gift fic. It ticked all their boxes from their letter.

They left me the most condescending comment I've read in quite a while.

It's petty, but I'm still really pissed off. I left them a way better comment on their coal gift to me, which actually managed to hit on one of my DNWs.

I know you wanted Conrad and Millie managing Christopher, and I worked as much of that in as I could, but I also thought it would be fun to have Conrad--sensible, clever Conrad!--be the one who needed to be managed a bit for once. I hope very much you enjoy this anyway.

eh, I actually immediately recognized what it must be (haven't read the fic yet) and looked it up to confirm, because a couple hours ago the recip of that fic was raving about her gift to me... so it's probably okay :).

Short answer: it depends.

Long answer: The mods look into it, they query the author of the fic to get their side of the story (unless it's an obvious unfinished or spitefic), then they get back to you with an answer that may be vague on what's happening with the author, or more detail, depending on what your specific complaint was. Something like "I didn't get requested characters" will get you sent to the emergency pinch-hit list if you don't have another gift, the mods will tell you that the person will be penalized, etc etc. Something like "This is squicky for me" will likely result in the mods apologizing but ODOA on you without telling you if they've penalized the author.

I socked up for a treat because I loved the prompt but the canon characters are all a race that I'm not, and I was afraid of wank if I got something glaringly wrong or was accidentally hurtful, though I got a race beta and tried to research etc.

It has the most comments of any treat I wrote and they're all nice and praise-y, but I'm still afraid to change it back over.

I have to stop refreshing my recipients gift page and comparing hits, kudos and comments. I wrote gen in a fandom where mine is the first and only fic for a movie most people probably haven't ever seen. The recipient seemed to love it, wrote a glowing comment, made another glowing comment in her journal, and it has a rec bookmark from someone else.

Seriously, self, that should qualify as winning. Go wrap some damn presents and get ready for company.

coal, I broke up with someone yesterday, and I can't bear to think about my yuletide gifts, even though they seem to be exactly what I wanted. I want to give my writers the usual joy I give them all, but it seems so daunting right now. And I fear that waiting is just going to make it worse, but I don't want to do it right now :(

You don't have to explain the reason, but put your name in "I'll Be Away For Yuletide" post and even given yourself a week if you need more time? That way your writers won't be concerned about the wait, and you can comment when you're in the right headspace.
