This is why coal exists to begin with. People in namespace are jerks and/or annoying but toe the Cult of Nice line so nothing can be done about them. They've always been that way and that's why coal and the Yuletide ffa threads keep on being the best places to hang out.

I'm not - it's a very Black show, and I can see people being uncomfortable writing that if they're not local and/or Black. A lot of the show's subtleties were lost on me as an international viewer, so I wouldn't feel like I could do well enough writing it to not ruin someone's Yuletide.

...Thanks for absolutely nothing, mods. This is extremely disappointing and, quite frankly, really shitty. Wasn't obscure fandoms supposed to be the whole point of Yuletide, and now you casually let them be screwed over?

I've had fandom tags take several days to get wrangled, and only the people who thoroughly read the community posts will even know about this! The vast majority of participants won't know that the truly rare fics are missing from the fandom list, and they aren't going to check it twice later on either.

What really pisses me off is the way Morbane emphasised that we weren't to bother poor AO3 support about this.

What should you do when...

...someone requests a bunch of characters, prompts certain groups of those characters separately, but does not explicitly say "I'm okay with a story that doesn't use all of my requested characters"?

This person has requested Popular Ship A/B and Popular Ship C/D, and their prompts all angle towards one pairing or the other, not both. Is it okay to go with their prompts, or will I potentially be punished if I write their prompt but don't shoehorn the other characters in?

So if a treat recip got defaulted on at deadline, how long should I hold off until posting the treat I wrote for them?

I'm not on the PH list. I'm fine with my fic becoming their main gift if they defaulted too or if they already have a PH author who defaults last-minute. I just don't want to deprive them of a chance to go out to the PH list if they did get defaulted on at deadline, since they are a generally Good Egg with excellent prompts.

I have been attempting to keep the spreadsheet of written fandoms up to date, however, some fandoms have not been wrangled. Additionally, some fandoms have been wrangled under a different name, and I can't match them up. (It's also possible that I missed something.)

Unwrangled Fandom Drabble Challenge - Last Chance!

It seems like you can avoid having your unwrangled fandom be invisible in Yuletide if someone posts a drabble or other short fic to AO3 (not to the Yuletide collection) ASAP. The tag gets wrangled once a fandom appears in the main collection, and then it becomes canonical for Yuletide. This isn't guaranteed to work, but it did seem to for some people on the last coal post.

Coalies, are you writing a first-time or otherwise unwrangled fandom? Say its name and a line or two about what it is, and someone can write a drabble! (And then probably orphan it since odds are it was written from Wikipedia.)

For those who have shaken - your hopes and fears about your gift

If you’ve shaken your gift and seen the tags, what are your hopes and fears about what the story might be like?

I’ve shaken mine and I hope it’s by a certain author in the fandom – by the way it’s tagged, it could very well be and I’m excited by that! I’ve requested a pairing whose weird, quirky dynamic I totally love and she gets it like few others do. If it’s by someone else, I’m kind of worried that it’s going to turn out to be OOC, ATG tropey glurge and that another fave character I requested to have a large role to play in the story, a good friend of one half of the pairing, is going to get barely a mention. :/

So what do you hope, or fear, to find?

I want to treat someone but all the requests and letters for anything I can think of that I want to write are all for happy group fic and that's just not in my wheelhouse.

Dark, existential, borderline twisted... is there anyone I can treat? It doesn't necessarily have to be Crueltide standards, but I can't stomach writing about fluffy baking time right now.

Are the mods done sending out pinch hits today? If I didn't go out and I don't have a gift, should I assume that my writer got an extension? I triple checked and my yuletide fic I wrote for my recipient does say that I fulfilled my assignment.
